About the Algarve

The Algarve is said to have the most beautiful coast of Europe.
The area is characterized by an indented coastline with coves surrounded by cliffs and sandy beaches.

The hinterland is alternating with orchards (olive trees, fig trees, citrus trees, almond trees, etc), wheat fields and small villages with characteristic white houses.

Along the coast there are the famous touristic places like Albufeira and Praia da Rocha. You'll also find here cozy fishing villages where it seems as if time stood still.

Who likes good food, will certainly feel at home in the Algarve. The grilled sardines in the fish restaurants in Portimão are world famous, even as the Portuguese wine and the melancholic fado music.
In short, it is not surprising that so many people search Portugal´s hospitality each year.

A bit of history:

The Algarve has a very broad history and has been visited by many. Therefor it has sometimes been conquered by many people from areas around the Mediterranean. Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs (Moors) and Spaniards have all left something behind in of their own culture.

The name Algarve originates from the Arabic "Al Gharb" (the land in the west) and the Moorish influence (until the 15th century this was an Arab province) is therefore still fully visible with its whitewashed houses and quaint chimneys. In the late 60s and early 70s the Algarve has been discovered by tourists. The tourism has been developed since and nowadays provides the largest source of income for this area.

To see and do:

The Algarve has many authentic villages that are all worth a visit. Some are well known like known Tavira, Silves, Ferragudo, Alvor and Sagres. Besides visiting the many villages there are beautiful rock formations. The best known are Algar Seco and the coastal cliffs between Sagres and Cabo São Vicente, which you certainly should not miss. Furthermore, the Algarve is known for its wide choice of beautiful golf courses. Some are even considered as the most beautiful courses in the world. Of course there are also many different water sports, including scuba diving, sailing, windsurfing and bodyboarding. A trip to Lisbon (2,5 hours by car) is with the toll way easy to do and totally worth a visit.
